US Weighs “Strong Options” as Tensions Rise with Iran over Protest Crackdown

The United States said on Monday it is considering “very strong options” in response to Iran’s crackdown on recent protests, increasing tensions between the two countries and raising concerns about a possible escalation. The remarks came as reports emerged of widespread arrests and restrictions imposed by Iranian authorities following demonstrations in several cities.

The protests were fueled by economic hardship and growing public frustration, according to observers. Iranian security forces moved to contain the unrest, while human rights groups accused the authorities of using excessive force. Tehran has denied the accusations, saying the measures were necessary to protect public order and accusing foreign powers of attempting to destabilize the country.

U.S. officials said Washington is closely monitoring the situation and emphasized that no final decision has been taken. While diplomatic and economic measures remain the primary tools under consideration, the administration has not ruled out other actions. The strong language used by U.S. leaders was widely seen as a warning rather than an indication of immediate military intervention.

Iran, meanwhile, said that communication channels with the United States remain open through intermediaries, signaling that diplomacy is still an option despite the sharp exchange of rhetoric. Iranian officials reiterated that they do not seek conflict but are prepared to respond to any external pressure.

International reactions have been cautious, with European countries calling for restraint and dialogue. Global oil prices showed volatility amid fears that rising tensions could disrupt energy markets. Analysts say the situation remains fluid, with the risk of escalation dependent on developments both on the streets of Iran and in diplomatic exchanges in the coming days.
