In a message addressed to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Tuesday that France “recognizes Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region as the sole basis for reaching a political solution.”
Macron added in his message to the Moroccan King on Morocco’s National Day, “For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework through which this issue must be resolved.”
He stated, “Our support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 is clear and steadfast,” adding that this plan “now constitutes the sole basis for reaching a just, sustainable, and negotiated political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
In the same message, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of Throne Day, the President of the French Republic assured His Majesty the King of the “steadfastness of the French position on this issue linked to the national security of the Kingdom,” and that his country “intends to act in alignment with this position at both the national and international levels.”
